Emirates Cabin Crew – this is a true story

Hello

Today I’d like to tell you a story. It’s a story about Luisa. Luisa is 23 years old and grew up in the Argentinian city of Buenos Aires.

Ever since she’s been a small girl, Luisa has dreamed of being cabin crew. She would watch in wonder as planes flew overhead and dream of the day she could take to the skies. When she was 7 years old, she flew for the very first time and when she met the friendly flight attendants on-board, she knew this was the job for her.

Luisa is from Buenos Aires in Argentina

Luisa’s cousin, Valentina, also dreamed of becoming a flight attendant and, when she become 21, she applied to become cabin crew with Aerolineas. She was turned down at her first attempt, but being very determined, she worked incredibly hard on her application and at last, she was successful!

She flew with Aerolineas for a couple of years and then decided to apply for Emirates. She was successful and headed off to start her new life in Dubai.

Valentina attended the Emirates Aviation College in Dubai

Luisa loved it when her older cousin came home to visit and would sit rapt as Valentina regaled them all with tales of walking on the Great Wall of China, shopping in Fifth Avenue in New York or snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef. And, as for the photos! Oh my, they were amazing! Luisa knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that this was the life for her.

So, she decided she would apply for cabin crew with Emirates as well. But, she encountered a problem as Emirates were not recruiting at the time! No worries, she knew from Valentina that it was important to get a lot of customer service experience, so she would focus on that until the day came when Emirates started recruiting again.

And, so the day came when Emirates re-opened their cabin crew recruitment and Luisa knew her time had come. She applied online and waited. And waited. And waited. She read blogs and joined Facebook groups to try and work out why she hadn’t had a response.

She reached out to Valentina who told her there were technical problems with the recruitment process and it looked like Emirates would return to open days.

So, she waited. And she waited. And waited some more.

Then the day came when Emirates announced that they were going to hold an open day in Buenos Aires. This was it- her very big chance! She rushed off to buy a new suit, some new shoes and the all-important red lipstick.

Luisa bought a whole new outfit including these shoes

She had a CV she had written in school, so she knew she had that covered.

So, she booked herself an appointment with a local photographer and got her formal and casual photos done. My goodness, this was costing her a lot of money, but surely it would be worth it to get the chance to wear the famous red hat?

Imagine her horror when that evening, Luisa got a message from her friend, Sofia- who had planned to attend the Emirates open day with Luisa- to say the open day had been cancelled.

Surely not? With a sinking feeling, Luisa logged on to Emirates website and sure enough, where just the day before the open day for Buenos Aires was listed, was now a total blank. This was a nightmare!

But Luisa, was not anything if not determined. She looked at all the open days that were still available and one caught her eye- Madrid. Luisa knew she could get a flight from Buenos Aires to Madrid so decided to go for it.

Surely Emirates couldn’t help but be impressed that she had flown across the world to attend an open day? Seeing someone this committed had to work in her favour right?

So, she went on to the Aerolineas website to book her flights. Unfortunately, the open day was only 4 days away, so the flights were very, very expensive. She had some savings, so she decided to go for it. After all, Luisa was convinced no-one else would do such a journey, so this had to put her at the front of the queue. Right?

Luisa quickly realised, from reading cabin crew blogs, that the assessment day was often the day after the open day and the final interview the day after this. So, she was going to have to stay for at least 4 nights in Madrid. My, this was all starting to add up, but It was all going to be worth it right?

Luisa was going to need to spend 4 nights in Madrid

So, off Luisa headed to Europe. She had never left the Americas before, so it was a big adventure, but nothing ventured, nothing gained right?

The following morning, Luisa made her way towards the hotel where the open day was being help (thanks Google maps!). It was due to start at 9am, but she couldn’t sleep for excitement, so she arrived at 7am. She was pretty sure she’d be the first one there, but no, there were hundreds of people there already. All of them dressed in a navy suit, a white blouse, hair in a bun, wearing the all-important red lipstick.

The exact same as Luisa in fact!

She started to feel worried. This wasn’t going to be as easy as she thought it was.

She joined the very long queue and two hours later was in front of a recruiter.

The time she had spent queuing had made her increasingly nervous and she felt her legs shaking as she took a seat in front of the recruiter.

The recruiter asked for Luisa’s CV and then asked her why she wanted to fly with Emirates.

Oh no, Luisa had not been prepared for this question.

She mumbled something about them being a brilliant airline and waited for the next question.

It didn’t come.

The recruiter simply thanked her for coming and told her results would be posted in next two hours.

Luisa simply couldn’t believe it.

This was it?

No-one has asked her how she got here, what job she currently held, and she hadn’t had an opportunity to tell them that she had flown all the way from Argentina to be here.

Luisa did not even get the chance to say she’d come all the way from Argentina

She felt sick to the stomach as she left the room and prepared to wait.

However, when she thought over it all, it hadn’t gone too badly.

After all, she knew she looked well-groomed, her teacher in school had told her her CV was good and ok, she had made a bit of a mess of the question, but that wouldn’t matter would it?

The two- hours felt interminable as she waited for the result, but then the moment came when the recruiter came and posted a list of those who had been invited to attend the assessment day.

Luisa waited until the crowd had dispersed before approaching the list. Her heart was hammering in her chest as she scanned the list desperately for her name. It wasn’t there- she had failed to get through.

She had flown all this way to spend less than one minute in front of a recruiter.

And she wasn’t due to fly home for another 2 days.

Luisa spent the next two days wandering morosely around Madrid, taking in nothing as she despaired over her situation.

She flew back to Buenos Aires the following day, feeling deeply saddened and several thousand dollars poorer.

Luisa had literally wasted thousands of dollars

Had it been worth it?

Not at all.

And, do you know the saddest part of Luisa’s story?

It’s actually a true story and Luisa did fly over to Madrid from Argentina to attend an Emirates Open Day.

Luisa reached out to me after discovering my blogs last week and asked for help.

I was so saddened by her story and asked if I could share it with others and Luisa was happy to let me do this.

Why do I want to share Luisa’s story?

Simple, really.

I don’t want ANYONE else to make the same mistakes that Luisa made.

You see, here’s the thing. Emirates simply DON’T CARE that you have travelled many, many miles to see them.

They are only interested in TWO things.

ONE- that you look the part.

It is vital that you look the part

SECONDLY, and far more importantly, that you can do the job and the way they decide this is by looking at your CV and noting down your answers to any questions that they ask you.

Now, I want to give you a bit of a reality check here.

#realitycheck

It’s easy to book flights and hotel accommodation. It’s fun to go shopping for a new suit and shoes. It’s enjoyable to spend hours in front of the mirror checking out different colours of red lipstick.

It’s exciting to have your friends round and practice putting your hair-up for the big day.

But, and here’s the reality check for you.

Doing these things will NOT get you the job.

Remember, Emirates have a HUGE pool of candidates to choose from.

In fact, over 97% of those who apply to become cabin crew with them will ever be successful.

So, of those 1,000 people who attend an open day, only 150 will be invited to an assessment day and only 30 will be offered a job.

Those other 970 will be rejected!

And, here’s the thing!

I know why those 30 will be successful.

And you probably won’t like the answer but here it comes!

The thing that makes these 30 stand-out from the others is simply

HARD WORK

Yep, that’s the secret.

They know that there is more to getting this job then shopping for shoes or trying on red lipstick.

They know that the secret of success is working on their CV, practising for the group activities, preparing SAR answers for the competency -based questions they know they will be asked at the final interview, or improving their video skills in preparation for their Skype interviews.

They know that competition to become cabin crew with Emirates is fierce and they know that they have to put the work in to ensure success.

They’re prepared to put the work in.

Are you?

PS- wondering what happened to Luisa?

Well, she decided to become a member of New2Crew Academy. We have been working hard on her new CV, she’s stuffed it full of Emirates keywords and it’s looking good. She’s spent ages in our Emirates Executive Lounge learning all about the airline so next time she’s asked about why she wants to work for Emirates she’s got a sure-fire answer at the ready!
In short, Luisa is now putting in the work she should have done the first time round and next time, we’re determined to give Luisa the happy ending she so surely now deserves.

Emirates Open Days

What on earth is going on over at Emirates? **Updated June 2018**

Well, that’s a VERY good question!

As you know, Emirates re-opened recruitment in January 2018.

Their new online application system was unveiled, and this meant the end of open days.

Or so we were told!

Their new online application, however, was soon beset by technical problems, in particular with the video interview.

It seems that Emirates’ online system is unable to update when an applicant completes a video interview.

So, the video interview has been halted until this problem is resolved.

Who knows how long that will take?

So, in the meantime, Emirates have started holding open days again!

Wow!

And to make matters even more complicated, not all open days are the same, so you never know what’s going to happen!

The first type of open day they are holding is a CV Drop.

What is interesting about this is that it seems that everyone who has applied from that country is being sent an email about the open day:

Within this email they also send you some details about working with them:

What seems to be happening is that EVERYONE who has applied online and whose application was under review is sent this email.

It appears that those who are being invited to attend an assessment day (which is usually the same day or day after the open day) are being selected from those who attend the open day ONLY.

So, if you don’t attend an open day in a country where they are holding open days, then you will NOT be invited to an assessment day.

Of course, this could all change at any time If they re-introduce the video interview!

So, how does a CV drop work?

It means that you can drop-in your CV anytime during the hours listed.

So, for example, if you look at this open day in London, you can see it runs from 0900 to 1600.

Be careful with this, however!

At the last open day in Dubai, 1000s of people turned up

Ok, ok- that’s NOT an Emirates Open Day, it’s just to illustrate the point!

Anyway, there were so many people there that they refused entry to people.

AND, they cancelled their next scheduled open day, so think it’s fair to say that they have more than enough CV’s from Dubai at the moment!

Is everything quite as chaotic as this?

No, not quite!

There was an open day held recently in Manchester and some of the lovely members of our FREE Facebook group, the Departure Lounge, told us all about it.

Wait, what?

You’re not in our FREE Facebook group to help people like you become cabin crew?

Are you mad?

If you want to join, you can find us at

http://mondrago.me

Anyway, I digress!

The open day in Manchester seemed a lot more organised.

Although it was also a CV drop off (and we know this because there is a start time of 0900 and a finish time of 1600), it wasn’t nearly as busy as the Dubai one!

So, what happened at it?

Well, according to one of our members, they were taken into a room with about 100 others. They each got the chance to handover their CV.

When handing over their CV, they were asked a couple of questions such as “Why would you like to fly for Emirates” or “What is your current job”.

Once everyone had handed over their CV, they were given a number.

They were then asked to wait outside, and the numbers would be posted up with those who had been successful in getting through to the assessment day, which was the following day.

On the way out, they passed the next group of candidates waiting to come into the room for their opportunity to handover their CV.

After an hour and a half, a list was posted up. On this list were the candidates who had been selected to attend the assessment day the following day.

So, these candidates went to the assessment day the following day.

If they were successful, they were invited to a final interview.

Priority is normally given to those who have travelled far to the assessment day.

Others were told they would be emailed with a date for a final interview.

But here’s where it gets really crazy as these candidates have now been emailed and told their final interview would be done via Skype or face time!

So, that’s how CV drops appear to be organised at the moment.

What about Open Days?

Well, these are different again!

You will know if the day you are attending is an open day and not a CV drop because it only gives you the start time:

So, what format does the open day take?

Before I begin though, I should just point out that the order of events may change slightly depending on where your Open Day is, the number of attendees at the Open Day and it may take place over one day or several days.

So please don’t take this blog as gospel and use it as a general guide only!

Wait, what? A punctuality test?!

A small word of warning- these Emirates Open Days are also set-up as punctuality tests, so if you’re not in the room you should be by the published start time, you’re out for good!

Give yourself TONS of time to get there and be friendly to EVERYONE you meet.

Why do I need to demonstrate great listening skills?

When you check-in for the Emirates Open Day you will usually be given a sticker which you will be expected to wear for the ENTIRE event, so please don’t take it off as it doesn’t match your lipstick as this will simply show you up as someone who can’t take instruction well (which is SO important when working as cabin crew!).

The number on this sticker is how you will be identified throughout the process, so make sure you listen out for it. Don’t let the Emirates recruiters shout out “No.24” repeatedly, to then look down and realise you are number 24- you won’t look good! So make sure you know your number and you listen out for it.

Again, remember, to be Emirates cabin crew  you will need to be good at listening to your passenger’s requests, so you need to show the recruiters that you are a great listener by listening intently to everything being said during the day.

What does the Emirates Airline representative talk about?

Once everyone has arrived and been given a sticker, you will watch a promotional video about Emirates Airlines and life as a member of Emirates cabin crew.

A representative from the airline will then give you a talk about what it’s like to be cabin crew with Emirates Airlines and life in Dubai. The representative will talk about things such as the Emirates flight attendant salary and what life is like when you fly emirates. You will then be asked if anyone has any questions

Oh no, I’ve heard the CV handover is really scary and it’s like walking a catwalk?

Following any questions from applicants, the first major screening event occurs- the CV handover.

Several tables will be set-up at the head of the room and you will need to submit your CV to the appropriate location you have been issued. Again, this is where listening is important!

What, that’s it? The Emirates Open day is over?

There will usually then be a break for lunch and only those applicants that have passed the CV handover will return for the rest of the day.

It’s really worth noting that you will have very limited to NO interaction with your Emirates recruiters before this stage, so the entire screening event is based on your CV and your personal presentation so remember-

 FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT!

And then they make even more people leave the Emirates Open Day? Seriously?!

The first group exercise takes place. Applicants are split into groups of approximately 20-25. Following this event, you will be informed whether you will continue with the process.

You will then participate in another group activity, this time in groups of around 8-10.

This time, you will be given a more complex scenario and after this group activity you will be informed who will be continuing.

You will then be given an English comprehension test followed by an Aptitude test. Only those who have passed these two tests will be invited to continue.

You will then be given a one-to-one or two-to-one interview with a member of the recruiting team, known as a final interview.

How long will it be before I hear I have been successful?

There will then be a tense time whilst you wait to hear if you have been successful!

The minimum waiting time seems to be 14 days and from my experience, it’s not unheard of to wait up to 6 weeks!

But I’m sure the wait will be worth it when you get that “Golden Call”!

It could take up to 6 weeks to receive your golden call

A gate? What’s that got to do with Emirates?

Remember, this is a general summary of the whole process.

You should try and look at each stage in the process as a gate you have to pass through.

So, in order to get your dream job as Emirates cabin crew  you have to pass through all the gates along the way!

Unfortunately, if you don’t do too well in any one stage, you will not be allowed to pass through the gate, even though you had been doing really well up until that point.

You have to be outstanding at EVERY stage in the Emirates Open day process and that’s why it’s so important to be prepared.

What do you mean- Emirates Airlines has nothing invested in me?

This may sound a bit mean, but Emirates Airlines has absolutely NOTHING invested in you.

There will be literally HUNDREDS of people standing in line behind you trying to get this job, and if you fail to impress then they may well do, so you’re going to have to put the work in.

So, what’s really important at EVERY stage of the process?

Attention to detail is REALLY important at EVERY stage of this process.

If your Emirates Airlines recruiter sees ONE thing, yep, just ONE thing, about you that they don’t like, then they will just move on to the next applicant.

Now this may sound discouraging, but please remember that the VAST MAJORITY of people will turn up completely unprepared.

They don’t understand how competitive the process is.

Is the Emirates Open Day really as competitive as you’re making out?

It absolutely is. But here’s the thing…

…others don’t understand why it is SO important to have prepared for the day.

They will show up thinking they can improvise, planning just to wing it and the job with Emirates Airlines will be theirs.

However, they won’t be dressed right, won’t behave right and they won’t present themselves well at the Emirates Open Day and that is why the majority of applicants FAIL

But, here’s where you have an advantage…You, however, understand the importance of EVERY SMALL DETAIL of the process and you will stand out for all the RIGHT reasons.

Phew, aren’t you glad you’re reading this blog?

However, Emirates are also holding assessment days:

As you can see, this one says invitation only on it, as only those who have been sent an invitation email from Emirates can attend.

The invitation email looks like:

These candidates have been selected based on their online application, so it’s important that you do continue to apply online, particularly if you live in a country where Emirates are NOT holding open days.

So, what seems to be happening is that IF you live in a country where Emirates are holding open days or CV drops you will get an email telling you about them IF you applied online.

Emirates only appear to be choosing candidates from these open days to then invite to an assessment day.

So, it looks like they are simply ignoring all those other applications in their system from that country if you DO NOT attend an open day!

However, they ARE looking at online applications from applicants in countries where they are NOT holding open days!

Confused?

Can’t say I blame you as I am too!

And, of course, all of this could change tomorrow when they solve the technical issues with their video interviews!

I will, of course, update this blog if they make any more changes!

Hope it’s helped

Emirates Cabin Crew Recruitment FAQ

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

There is a TON of “advice” out there on the web about the new Emirates Cabin Crew recruitment process.

Unfortunately, not all of this advice is good:

Talk to the recruiter as if you’re talking to your lover?!!

I mean, come on!

The problem is, is that there are loads of groups out there but no-one is qualified to offer advice, so you are often given really BAD advice.

There is currently a Facebook group out there for people who dream of being cabin crew with Emirates and it has over 23,000 members.

So, you’d think there would be loads of experts in there right?

Wrong, because that’s where the advice about talking to your lover came from!

So, please, please ONLY take advice from people who actually know what they’re talking about!

I DO know what I’m talking about and if you’d like to check me out, you can do so at:

About.me/paulinepark

Ok, convinced I’m the real deal?

Then, let’s go…

I get many questions every day about applying to become cabin crew with Emirates.

So, I thought I would put together a guide to the most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) I encounter about Emirates.

I will update these questions frequently, so if the answer you are looking for is not here, please check back soon and it may have been answered!

What documents must I upload for my application?

The mandatory documents are:

  • Updated CV in English
  • Formal full-length photo
  • Casual half-length photo
  • Casual full-length photo
  • Formal passport size photo *
  • Education certificate (highest level) *

*-  if you do not have these two things, they can be uploaded prior to the assessment day.

However, EVERYTHING else MUST be uploaded BEFORE you submit your application.

You can also upload additional documents, such as additional photos or a covering letter.

However, make sure you add ALL the mandatory documents first.

Help, there are technical issues with my application. What can I do?

Yes, there certainly seems to be technical difficulties with Emirates recruitment site and no doubt it’s related to the sheer volume of applicants!

In particular, there seems to be a huge issue relating to HireVue, the company who do the video interviews for Emirates.

Many people are seeing this message, despite having already submitted their application.

So, they think to themselves, well maybe they haven’t received my video interview, I’ll go and do it again.

So, they click on the link to try again:

And are told they have completed the video interview

AAARRRGGGHHH- this is SO frustrating especially is there is no-one to ask for help.

So, here’s what I’ve discovered.

There is a disconnect between HireVue’s system and Emirates recruitment site.

If you see this message ONCE:

IT WON’T BE REMOVED!

How annoying huh!

So, what should you do?

Check your email inbox:

If you have this email below then you have absolutely nothing to worry about, as your video has gone through:

This is an auto-generated email and is sent as soon as your video is uploaded.

If you don’t receive it, then Emirates have NOT received your video interview.

There have been other technical issues with the site.

It seems to be that cookies are holding on to a lot of information and applicants can’t bypass this and move on with their application.

Sometimes, if you click save and continue, on the page you are on, this is enough to move on with your application.

Otherwise, my advice is to log-out of that account and try on a different device.

So, if you did your original application on a laptop, log-in on your phone and see if you can complete it this way.

Unfortunately, there is no technical support available from Emirates.

If, after trying everything above, you still can’t submit your application, the best thing would be to log-in, withdraw this application and start all over again.

And hope this one is more successful!

What stages does your application go through when you submit?

Application received– this indicates that Emirates have received your application and it is now sitting in a queue waiting to be assessed.

Application under review– your application is now being assessed

Not shortlisted– you have not been successful on this occasion. You can re-apply after 6 months.

On hold– Emirates like the look of you. However, they can’t take your application further at this stage. This will likely be because they are planning their assessment days worldwide and have to have a certain number of candidates attending before they invite applicants.

Invite to an assessment day– you have been successful at the application stage and have now been invited to attend an assessment day.

How likely am I to get a job as cabin crew with Emirates?

The short answer is not very!

Emirates are planning on recruiting 360 new cabin crew per month.

This means, over one year, Emirates will recruit 4,320.

This sounds like a lot and it is.

However, when you consider that in 2014, Emirates received

483,944 applications.

Yep, you read that right.

Nearly half a million applications!

This means, arithmetically, your chance is less than 1%

So, competition is FIERCE and you will have to work tirelessly to get this job.

Why are keywords so important when completing your online application for Emirates?

Our starting point in the whole process is finding out what the airline are looking for.

You need to trawl Emirates’ recruitment site to find out which keywords and phrases they were using to describe their “perfect” cabin crew.

You see, what you want to be doing is “mirroring” Emirates’ “perfect” candidate.

The more you do this, the more you will look like EXACTLY what Emirates are looking for and the more likely you are to be successful.

So, use these keywords EVERYWHERE!

In your CV, in your covering letter, in your application answers, in your video interview, on your assessment day.

When I say everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE!

Think about it.

Emirates have actually GIVEN you EXACTLY what they want.

How kind of them! So, your job, more than anything else, is to give show them that you have these skills and characteristics in abundance!

Will I have to travel to Dubai for my assessment day?

No, you won’t

Emirates will hold assessment days worldwide.

They are starting their assessment days in Dubai.

However, as the process continues, they will be able to put all successful applications into a number of holding “pools” throughout various worldwide locations.

It is thought that as soon as they have the requisite number of candidates for an assessment day, they will then plan an assessment day at that location and candidates on-hold for that location will be invited.

Do I have to be 21 when I apply, or can I apply before this?

In the past Emirates allowed you to apply a few months before your 21st birthday.

The process to become cabin crew is a long one and by the time you started your training, candidates would have turned 21.

However, they now stipulate on their application page that you must be 21 at the time of application.

Please DO NOT apply if you are under 21. You have to complete your date of birth as part of your application, so in order to be able to complete your application you will have to give a false date of birth.

Also, cabin crew HAVE to be able to follow instruction. So, by not following the instructions Emirates have given you, you are letting Emirates see that you are not suitable for cabin crew.

How do I know if Emirates have received my application?

Once you have submitted your application, you will be sent the email below from Emirates:

This email can take a few days to be sent, so don’t worry if you don’t receive it straightaway.

However, if you DON’T receive this email, then you have not submitted your application successfully.

If this is the case, log back into your account and complete your application.

What are the photo requirements for Emirates?

Well, Emirates give you them all in GREAT detail!

Please follow them carefully as failure to do so will mean that your application will be rejected.

I have written a blog about Emirates photo requirements, which you can read here

You can see them below:

You can download these photo guidelines from:

https://cdn.ek.aero/downloads/ek/pdfs/careers/Cabin_Crew_Photo_Guidelines.pdf

What file formats can you upload your files in?

These are the file formats that are accepted by Emirates:

Ok, so here’s what you need to know about files to be uploaded. When you submit your application to Emirates, the first thing that happens is that it is pre-screened.

Who does this pre-screening?

Allow me to introduce a good friend of mine…

This is Emmy, the Emirates robot

Emmy and her robot friends, work behind the scenes at Emirates doing all the pre-screening and scanning of your documents.

Ok, ok so there are not really robots doing all the work, but there are computer programs hard at work doing all the pre-screening.

What they are doing is scanning your application for information that Emirates has asked it to look for. It then “extracts” all this information.

So, when a recruiter wants to have a look at your application, what they find is all the relevant information that these “robots” have extracted.

These Emirates robots CAN’T read ALL file types and Emirates have kindly provided you with a list of those that their robots CAN!

These are:

So, you need to make sure that when you upload documents, they are in the file formats shown above.

Don’t worry about your photos though.

Recruiters are able to able to view image files such as .jpg or .png

Please be aware though, that your photos will ONLY be looked at by a recruiter if you pass the pre-screening.

And, you can only pass the pre-screening IF you upload your CV in one of the formats above.

How does the video interview work?

I have written a blog post all about Emirates’ video interview which you can find here

How long will Emirates be open for recruitment?

The answer is that no-one knows! Generally speaking, Emirates recruitment was always open for recruitment. It then closed twice- once for a time in 2009 and then more recently, from November 2016 to January 2018. Both times were as a result of financial issues within the company.

However, they have not recruited any new cabin crew since 2016 so we can assume that they will need to replace cabin crew who have left during this time. Estimates claim that cabin crew turnover is around 20% per year.

Emirates also placed a US$15.1 billion order for 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliners at the 2017 Dubai Airshow so it’s fair to say that things are looking optimistic over at Emirates and they will need considerable crew for their new aircraft and their new routes.

However, when Emirates closed their recruitment suddenly in November 2016, there were approximately 900 people who had been accepted for cabin crew training whose application was never moved further.

These applicants have now been contacted and asked to submit a video interview and update their work experience.

Emirates reckons they will take 300 new cabin crew from this original figure of 900.

These applicants will be due to start their cabin crew training in April 2018.

Emirates have released information saying they plan to train 360 new cabin crew per month.

This equates to 4,320 cabin crew in one year.

My advice to you is to start an application with Emirates as soon as you can.

No-one knows how long the job will be live for and the application link could be removed at any time.

Therefore, we recommend that you start an application.

You can add in your personal details and then save it as a draft.

That means you still have a live application, even though there is no option for new people to apply for the post.

How can I improve my English?

To fly for Emirates, your level of English must be FLUENT

The international language of aviation is ENGLISH.

All your training is in English, your briefings will be held in English and you will communicate on board in English.

There are many of you whose English is not yet fluent.

Spend time improving your English.

When you upload your video interview, an audio file is automatically extracted from it.

When this is analysed, if your English is NOT fluent, then you will automatically be rejected.

So, don’t waste your time applying for Emirates until your English is fluent.

Spend time improving your English.

There are lots of free English courses on the web, so start using them.

There are loads of great resources on the web for improving your English.

The One I would particularly recommend are:

How long should my CV be?

The quick answer is it very much depends!

However, I’m sure you want a more detailed answer.

The traditional advice was that a CV should be one page, or at the maximum two.

However, this advice has been turned on it’s head a bit!

Your CV WON’T be read by a recruiter but instead will be scanned for information by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which is a computerised program that “reads” CVs and extracts important information.

Because these ATS programs, or Emirates robots as I like to think of them, can “read” so quickly, you are no longer constrained by this two- page rule as humans aren’t reading your CV.

So, you can get away with making your CV longer.

However, your CV will be kept on file AND a human recruiter may wish to have a look at it.

If that’s the case, then they WON’T be impressed by your 12- page CV!

So, you have to have a happy medium!

I personally would recommend that your CV is NEVER longer than 4 pages and it is stuffed FULL of Emirates’ keywords so both the robot and the recruiter are happy!

Why do I have to be 21 before I can be cabin crew with Emirates?

The legal age of drinking alcohol in Dubai is 21, so in order for you to lawfully be allowed to serve alcohol on-board an Emirates flight, you have to be at least 21.

Can I wear jewellery in my photos?

The photo guidelines specifically state that:

Please make sure you follow these guidelines EXACTLY.

Cabin crew need to be able to follow instructions, so if you upload a photo of you wearing any jewellery, you will look like you can’t follow instructions and you will be rejected.

I have written a blog about the photo guidelines and you can find it here.

What make-up should I wear for my photos?

You should be aiming for a very professional and well-groomed look. I have written about what make-up you should wear in my photo guidelines blog, which you can find here

I see Emirates are looking for 1+ year’s customer service experience, does this have to be continuous?

No, not at all. They are asking for 1+ years customer service experience combined. So, if you add up ALL of your customer service experience and it comes to more than one year, you’re good to go!

What do they mean by customer service experience. Do I have to have worked in shop or a restaurant?

Not at all. When they talk about about “customers”, what they are really talking about are jobs where you have worked with the public. So, this could be a whole range of things from working in a bar, to working as a receptionist, to working as nurse. If you have worked with the public, then you have worked in customer service.

This experience doesn’t have to be confined to paid jobs. If you have volunteered at all, think about this. For example, if you have worked in charity shop then this would count as customer service experience. If you have volunteered with a local youth group- all of this would count as customer service.

It says you can’t photoshop or alter your photos. How do you then get a white background?

It’s fine to remove the backgrounds of your photos. However, you cannot alter yourself in any of your photos. So, you cannot use photoshop to remove blemishes for example, and you cannot add any filters to your photos.

Again, by doing so, you look as if you can’t follow instruction which would make you very poor cabin crew.

When I am completing my work experience in the application should I just copy and paste the information from my CV?

No!

It is another opportunity to “sell” yourself using different keywords. I would probably change it up a bit from your CV if I could so that when your application is pre-screened it extracts even more information about you which may give you a higher score.

Here’s a tip for you. You know how I am completely obsessed with keywords? Well, I am going to mention them again!

All of Emirates application is now online and everything is now automated. This means that no-one will look at your online application. Everything will be run through a computer program and ONLY those applications that pass this will be seen by a recruiter.

And what is this computer program (or as I like to think of them, Emirates robots!) looking for?

In fact, before I go any further, may I introduce you to Emmy, the Emirates robot?

Emmy is a good friend of mine and she’s been VERY helpful at letting me know EXACTLY what her and her robot friends are looking for during your application.

They are looking for keywords so give them lots and lots and they will fall in love with you!

But what does this have to do with your work experience section?

Well, simple really.

This section will also be “searched” by these robots, so you want to fill it with keywords as well.

So, some advice for you.

At this stage, I would save my application as a draft and log-out.

I would then spend some time drafting your roles and responsibilities in your current and previous jobs and make sure they are full of keywords.

The old advice used to be to keep everything as brief as possible and summarise as much as you could so the recruiter could scan it quickly.

However, modern technology has turned this on its head a bit.

Because these programs (or Emirates robots) are such fast readers and are able to extract incredible amounts of information really, really quickly, you can actually write as much as you want. In fact, it may be the case that the more you write the better as they love to read!

However, I would caution you not to write too much!

If your application makes it past these Emirates robots, it will be assessed by a human recruiter and they WON’T to read pages and pages of your work experience.

So, try to have a happy medium!

And a good way to do this is to not write pages and pages but make sure that what you do write is FULL of keywords!

That way, both the Emirates robot and the human recruiter will be pleased with you!

What should I wear for my photos?

You are told what to wear on the Emirates photo guidelines:

Try and look as much like the example photos given above

If you would like more guidance about your photos, you can find out more at my photo blog here

Can I have tattoos?

Please use this photo to guide you:

If you have tattoos in ANY of the red areas above, then you CANNOT be cabin crew with Emirates.

They DO NOT allow any covering on tattoos in the red area.

You may be tempted to “hide” your tattoo and apply anyway.

That’s your choice but I should warn you that you will have a medical in your own country and one by an aviation doctor when you arrive in Dubai. If your tattoo is discovered during your medical, your contract will be terminated.

Also, if any of your fellow cabin crew report your “hidden” tattoo then you may be dismissed.

Am I too old to apply to be cabin crew with Emirates?

The first thing I would say is that there is no upper age limit for Emirates. That said, it will probably be a bit more difficult for you if you are older. Just because they don’t have an upper age limit doesn’t mean it you have an equal chance. They will prefer younger candidates simply because they are likely to stay with them for longer. However, you can convince them that you intend to stay for a long time! Also, the job is very physically tiring.

You can be on your feet for up to 18 hours and this would exhaust anyone. Then you have to deal with the constant time differences. So, if you are older you will have to convince Emirates that you do have the stamina to deal with the job. Talk up how fit and healthy you are.

If you are more mature, then you will have more experience to bring to the job, so you want to highlight this as well.

You may look at photos of Emirates cabin crew and assume they are always so young. But the reality is that it is mainly young people who apply to be cabin crew in the Middle East as they enjoy living in Dubai and the constant travelling that comes with the job.

However, that’s not to say that there are plenty of older crew flying with Emirates, so if you fancy it, then go for it!

Am I tall enough to be cabin crew with Emirates?

You have to be a minimum height of 160cms.

The height restriction very much relates to the aircraft you are flying on. The bigger the aircraft, generally speaking, the taller you have to be!

For flying on most commercial aircraft, the minimum height is generally 5’2” which is approximately 160cm. The maximum height is 6’2” which is 190cm.

Why do they have these restrictions?

Well, it’s to ensure that you can reach the emergency equipment that is carried on-board the aircraft.

This emergency equipment is usually stored in the overhead lockers, so you have to be able to reach in and access this equipment in the event of an emergency.

There is also a maximum height as any taller than this and you would be incredibly uncomfortable working within the confines of the cabin!

Emirates also you to take part in what is known as a reach test.

This involves you reaching a marker on the wall. This marker will be placed at 212cm.

You have to easily be able to reach this height without wearing shoes and you can stand on your tiptoes!

The reach test takes part early on in the assessment day.

Why is this?

Well, it’s simple.

If you can’t reach the marker, then you cannot be employed as cabin crew and you will be asked to leave the assessment day.

So, if you are worried about the reach test, is there anything you can do?

Well yes, there are a few things you should do.

First up, put a marker like the one on your photo on your bedroom wall. Make sure it is at 212cm. You should maybe put it a few cm’s higher so you know you will definitely reach it on the assessment day.

Then practice, practice and practice some more.

Each time you are practising, you are stretching which will make it easier for you on the assessment day.

Now, this may sound a bit crazy, but some of my ex-students have also used yoga and pilates to help them stretch and become taller and it has worked!

So, if you are very, very close to reaching 212cm, do as much stretching as you can and you may pull it off on the assessment day.

Am I too fat to be cabin crew with Emirates?

Why is it relevant?

You will need be able to fit into a crew seat (the foldaway seat where cabin crew sit for take- off and landing) and be able to use a seatbelt WITHOUT a seatbelt extension as part of their application process.

Why do they ask such a thing?

Well, being cabin crew is an incredibly physical job as you are on your feet for long periods of time.

You are also trained in how to deal with a range of emergency scenarios and you must be fit to be able to deal with these.

Also, you are working within the confines of an enclosed aircraft cabin which can often be quite tight spaces.

So, ultimately, because of the physical demands of the job, you cannot be overweight.

So, how do airlines judge whether you are too large to be cabin crew.

Airlines will expect you to have a BMI of less than 25.

What’s your BMI?

It’s simply your Body Mass Index which is a calculation based upon your weight and height.

There are many calculators online which allow you to measure your BMI.

Here’s a good one…

https://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/Healthyweightcalculator.aspx

You are aiming to have a BMI between 18.5 and 25.

Anything less than 18.5 is classed as underweight and over 25 is classed as overweight.

Anything over 30 is classed as obese.

So, go and check out your BMI and if it is over 25, you need to think about losing some weight before applying to become cabin crew.

A great way of doing this is upping your exercise.

Not only will this help you drop some pounds, it will also get you fitter.

The fitter and stronger you are, the more you will be able to cope with the rigours of the job so it’s a win-win situation!

Can Emirates cabin crew wear glasses?

Emirates don’t allow glasses at all and ask you to wear contact lenses instead.

If you struggle wearing contact lenses (and many people do!) then the Emirates’ doctors will provide you with a written letter to state this and you will then be permitted to wear them.

However, within their uniform and grooming guidelines, Emirates would ask that your glasses blend with their uniform.

For that reason, I would suggest that if you are attending an assessment day with Emirates, you should consider wearing contact lenses.

What are the cabin crew qualities Emirates are looking for?

First up, although many people think the key role of cabin crew is to serve tea and coffee, it’s actually to keep people safe.

Cabin crew are first and foremost, safety professionals. Think about it. You can’t call the emergency services at 36,000 feet in the air, so they have to be able to deal with a range of potential scenarios.

If there’s a fire on-board, they can’t call the fire service, they have to don portable breathing equipment and deal with it themselves as a team.

If someone takes a heart attack or goes into labour, they can’t call an ambulance, they have to take control of the situation themselves.

If a passenger has had too much to drink, the police are not on hand to put them in handcuffs and arrest them, so the cabin crew will need to work together to restrain the passenger and restore order in the cabin.

So, for these reasons, cabin crew are incredibly highly trained. As well as their initial training course which covers fire training, conflict management and first aid, cabin crew also take part in continuous training in order to keep their skills up-to-date.

So, what type of skills will airlines be looking for in order to manage in any of the scenarios highlighted above?

All airlines are looking for staff who are able to take control when required, able to follow procedures and can stay calm under pressure.

But, let’s be honest.

Although cabin crew are highly trained individuals who are more than capable of dealing with a range of emergency procedures, the vast, vast majority of the time they won’t encounter emergency situations on-board.

So, what other skills are they expected to have?

Well, it’s important that cabin crew have empathy skills.

Why is this?

Well, just think about the number of people cabin crew encounter on a daily basis- it’s a lot!

So, cabin crew have to like people!

They have to like meeting new people and they must really enjoy helping people.

It’s also really important that they have good customer service skills. Ultimately, you will be working with customers day in and day out, so you need to enjoy working with a range of different people and you need to enjoy going the extra mile for them and impressing them with your level of service.

Remember, cabin crew are ultimately the face of an airline, so it’s really important that they enjoy giving their passengers great service and actively enjoy helping them.

Cabin crew also need to be very flexible.

If you like the routine of a 9-5 job then cabin crew is most definitely not for you!

Your roster will generally only be given to you one month in advance, which makes planning difficult. You may be flying to New York one week and Tokyo the next, so you have to be very adaptable and actively enjoy change.

You also will work on standby which means you have to be within 90 minutes of your base airport in case you are called in for duty.

So, unless you are someone who thrives in this type of environment, cabin crew may not be for you.

Teamwork is massively important when working as cabin crew. You have to work with your colleagues to ensure a smooth cabin service during your passengers’ flight.

Also, in any kind of emergency situation, you have to work with your colleagues to help respond to the problem. So, if you are someone who doesn’t enjoy teamwork, then you will find working as cabin crew very difficult.

Cabin crew will need to have good cultural awareness and a genuine interest in working with people from all over the world, particularly if you are keen in flying with a middle Eastern airline.

And, finally, grooming!

As you know, cabin crew are the face of the airline and, as such, have to be impeccably groomed at all times. So, if you enjoy personal grooming and looking your best at all times, then this is may be the perfect job for you!

So, please, please make sure that you mention these qualities ALL THE TIME during your application and assessment day as this will help convince Emirates that you are the PERFECT person for the job.

So, here is a quick summary of the qualities Emirates are looking for:

  • Able to stay calm under pressure
  • Able to take control
  • Ability to follow procedures
  • Empathy
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Flexibility
  • Adaptability
  • Teamwork
  • Cultural awareness
  • Excellent grooming standards

What would really, really impress Emirates would be if you can give them an example of each and every one of these characteristics!

So, before you even apply to Emirates (or in fact, right now!) take 5 minutes to write down an example of when you displayed EVERY quality listed above.

Then use these examples throughout your recruitment process.

Do you need perfect teeth?

Your teeth should be of cosmetically acceptable appearance as cabin crew are expected to smile all the time.

As far as teeth are concerned, anything which does not look natural is unacceptable, including braces or noticeable missing teeth.

This is the guidance Emirates’ give to their dentists when they are carrying out medical checks on new cabin crew:

· Teeth should be free from caries and all necessary fillings completed.
· Roots etc. should have been removed. Sockets clean, uninfected and healthy.
· Temporary fillings are not acceptable.
· Gingiva and oral cavity to be free from infection or disease.
· Teeth should be free from plaque, scaled and polished. Good level of periodontal health.
· Crown and bridgework, if present, should be in good condition.
· On initial examination in EK clinic, if treatment is found to be unsatisfactory or uncompleted, it will need to be restored at the patients’ expense.
· Dentures, if applicable, should be in good condition and fit properly.
· Root canal treatment should be complete and satisfactory. For recent RCT, a post treatment periapical X-ray should be supplied
· Wisdom teeth which are normally symptom-free (i.e. which do not compromise adjacent teeth or do not create recurrent infections) do NOT require removal.
· Dentition should be of cosmetically acceptable appearance
· Gaps / missing teeth do not need to be replaced by bridges etc. if posterior and unnoticeable.

Can I be cabin crew and wear braces?

The short answer to that is no.

You cannot wear braces whilst working in cabin crew.

I have known candidates to attend assessment days wearing braces. These braces were due to come off in the next couple of months, so the recruitment team asked for them to send them photos once they were removed.

However, if your braces can be removed, I would recommend doing this temporarily whilst attending an assessment day.

What do Emirates think of scars and birthmarks?

So, first up, how worried should you be if you have scars or birthmarks?

The truth is, it depends where they are!

If they are under your uniform, then you really have no need to worry.

Most airlines allow you to wear long-sleeved blouses, so you can request these if you are worried about scarring on your arms.

However, if the scarring can’t be seen whilst in uniform, there really is no need to be worried.

So, what if it can be seen?

Well, it very much depends on the size and the location of the scarring or the birthmark.

You can cover the scarring or birthmark with make-up.

If this then means the scar or birthmark is covered, you shouldn’t have a problem.

What make-up to choose?

That is completely up to you!

I have helped 1000s of people like you become cabin crew and I asked them the brand they would most recommend.

The one that kept being mentioned over and over again was Dermablend, so it may be worth checking this out.

Another one I have heard mentioned a few times is Covermark.

We don’t receive any commission at all from either of these companies, I’m just telling you ones that have been recommended to me, so I hope you find them useful!

Should you tell Emirates if you have scars or birthmarks?

The answer to this is yes.

You will have to undertake a full medical if you are successful at your assessment day, so it’s best to just to be upfront about it at the assessment day and tell the truth.

Emirates are only concerned about scarring as it may impact your ability to carry out your cabin crew duties, so if you can convince them that you will be perfectly able to carry out your role, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Emirates Photo Guide

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

Hello and welcome to your Emirates Photo Guide

Ok, let’s talk photos!

Emirates will ask you to submit photos as part of your application process.

If you think about it, these photos are the first time the airline will get to “meet” you, so they have to be good!
We all know the importance of impeccable grooming for cabin crew, so this is your opportunity to prove you have these very high standards.

So, let’s think first of all about what to wear.

In the photos you send, you should wear formal interview wear, exactly the same as you would wear if you were attending an Emirates assessment day.

So, let’s think about ladies first of all (don’t worry, gentlemen, we’ll get to you soon!)

Ladies you should wear:

• a business suit in either navy, grey or black. The jacket MUST be fastened in your photos
• the skirt of the suit should be knee length and definitely NO SHORTER
• a white blouse
• skin coloured tights
• black or navy plain court shoes

Gentlemen, you should wear:

• a business suit in black, navy or grey. The jacket MUST be fastened in your photos
• a white shirt
• a tie (and it should be a business tie in very muted colours)
• black socks (socks should not be showing)
• plain black shoes

Ok, so we’ve got the outfit covered!

Let’s talk about make-up for the ladies!

Ladies, you should be looking to copy the cabin crew look and this includes:

• foundation
• concealer
• eyeshadow
• eye pencil
• blusher
• lipstick (lipliner is permitted but must MATCH lipstick)
• face powder

Please avoid any bright or glittery make-up, remember, you are aiming for a professional look!

Let’s think about hair now!

For you ladies, again you want to emulate the cabin crew look.

So, this means:
• if your hair touches your collar, it should be worn up in either a bun or a ponytail
• however, if your ponytail is longer than 7 inches, it should be worn in a bun
• make sure your hair is pulled away from your face

Gentlemen:

• your hair should be worn short and away from the face
• no facial here please as Emirates don’t like it!

Ok, nearly there- just nails and jewellery to consider!

Ladies:

• false nails are allowed but make sure they are relatively short
• nails should be clean and well maintained
• make sure nail polish is not glittery or garish
• NO jewellery or watches should be worn in your photos
• NO piercings

Gentlemen:

• nails should be clean and well maintained
• no earrings or piercings
• NO watches should be worn in your photos

You can find Emirates’ photo guidelines at the end of this blog

OK, so you’re looking AMAZING!

So, on to the photos!

Here are some posing tips for you:

• Need to SMILE with teeth showing
• your hands should be relaxed and at your side
• your hands MUST be visible in the photos
• you need to stand straight with both legs together
• you need to face the camera
• your jacket must be buttoned up!

OK, so we’ve got you looking good and your posing is perfect!

Below you can see the photo requirements for Emirates:

You can download these photo guidelines from:

https://cdn.ek.aero/downloads/ek/pdfs/careers/Cabin_Crew_Photo_Guidelines.pdf

One thing you will notice is that you need to also include casual photos with your application.

Again, follow the instructions REALLY carefully!

There are REALLY detailed instructions given to both your formal and casual photos, so please follow these instructions EXACTLY

By the way, you cannot alter your appearance or facial features as this is not allowed by the airline, so NO filters please. You can save them for your Snapchats!

Good luck with your application

Emirates Application Process

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

Hello and welcome to this post on the Emirates Application Process.

Ok, so first up where do you apply?

You can apply via Emirates careers’ page:

http://www.emiratesgroupcareers.com/

Once there, you look for cabin crew positions:

You click on this job and the application page opens. When it does so, you need to click on apply:

You are then taken to the page below where you have to agree with their privacy statement…

If you accept, then you are taken to their home page where you have to create an account. To do so, you would click on new user

Then you have to complete some details to create an account…

Please keep these details safe as these are your log-in details so you will need them to keep an eye on the progress of your application!

So, it’s time to start applying!

First up, you need to include some personal details and then they are then looking for some more information about you including your gender, height and weight.

Next, they want to know what languages you speak. You will be asked for your primary (or native) language. You will then be asked to tell them what other languages you can read, write and speak.

Next up they want to know about your work experience. Now here’s a tip for you. You know how I am completely obsessed with keywords? Well, I am going to mention them again!

All of Emirates application is now online and everything is automated.

Ok, next section is your education. Be careful not to add too much to this section. Whilst Emirates do want to know what qualifications you have, you don’t need to go over-board and mention EVERY qualification you have ever received!

The next section is for certificates. Again, ONLY mention those that are specific to the role of cabin crew OR if Emirates have SPECIFICALLY asked for them.

Ok, the next section is INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT!

Here you get to upload your documents!

Now, as you can see, there are some MANDATORY documents.

Now, this means that if you apply and you DON’T upload them, then you look like you can’t follow instructions.

And, what do cabin crew have to always do?

Yep, follow instructions!

So, if you don’t upload the mandatory documents, then these robots will realise and put your whole application in the bin!

Which is the LAST thing we want to happen!

They can be total devils these Emirates robots can’t they?

So, make sure you upload ALL of the mandatory documents or they will NOT be happy!

And, we’re nearly there now…

Emirates have got job specific questions for you and once you have answered these it’s on to the video interview.

Please make sure you are really well-prepared for this stage. It would be a nightmare to get this far and blow it now!

So, once you are good to go, log-in to your account and dazzle them with your amazing video interview.

Once you have completed your video interview, you submit your application and that’s you finished- phew!

What a lot of work!

You should be REALLY proud of yourself for getting this far.

Emirates will then send you a confirmation email which is really your receipt for your application.

All you can do now is sit back, cross your fingers and wait!

Good luck ?

And remember to keep these Emirates robots happy…

Emirates video interview

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

Oh no, an Emirates video interview ?!

Yes, I’m afraid so!

You will need to be prepared to put in a LOT of work to pass this stage of the application.

Now before we begin, I just want to make sure that you understand that this is an INTERVIEW.

So, you may not be meeting anyone face-to-face, as you are going to record your answers and then send them on to Emirates.

But this doesn’t matter.

You must treat it as a formal interview and that starts with you looking the part and being well-prepared.

Emirates use a company called HireVue to conduct video interviews on their behalf.

You can choose to do your video interview on a PC or you can download the HireVue App and complete the video interview on either a tablet or a smartphone.

People have asked which one is best and no-one is better than the other. So choose whichever one you feel most comfortable with.

HireVue has a webpage available to learn more about their video interviews, so you can check it out at:

https://app.hirevue.com/learn-more/on-demand/

It really is well-worth checking out the information on this page.

There is also a good video on the page as well which is worth a watch.

Why not pop-over there and check it out?

I’m happy to wait!

Oh good, you’re back again.

So, what happens next is that you click on the link to begin your video interview!

Deep breaths all round!

You are given a welcome and given an estimated length for your interview. Which, believe it or not, is only 5 minutes so you don’t have long to “wow”!

Then you get to watch a 30 second video of a cabin crew member advising you to let your personality shine!

Next up, the system will check that your webcam (or camera), microphone and internet access are all working well.

A small piece of advice. If you don’t get a green tick for even ONE of these, please don’t ignore it and hope for the best.

You need ALL three to be working correctly before you can begin.

If you are told there are technical issues, you MUST resolve them before you go any further.

Remember, this part of the video interview is NOT recording so it doesn’t matter if it takes you an hour to sort out any technical difficulties. DO NOT move on until they’re sorted!

Ok, so now you have the option to try some practice questions. You can see that you are given a prep. time for each question. This is to give you some time to plan what you are going to say.

Once your prep. time has run out, your recording will start automatically.

In the practice sessions, you have 3 minutes to complete a question.

I want you to treat this video interview EXACTLY as you would a final interview.

And I want you to spend a LOT of time preparing your answers.

There are a number of key areas that Emirates will question you about.

One is customer service/ hospitality. So, have LOADS of SAR answers prepared for this topic.

Another key area is cabin crew– why do you want to be cabin crew and why would you be good at it, so have answers for these as well.

Another key area is Emirates themselves- why Emirates, what do you know about Emirates- so prepare for these as well.

Another key area is Dubai– why would you like to live there and how would you cope living in a foreign country, so prepare SAR answers for these too.

The final key area relates to travel- where you have been and where you would love to go. This is a great area to be questioned in because you can really stand-out here. EVERY airline recruiter I have ever known laments the lack of passion candidates demonstrates for travel. Yet, the job is ultimately ALL about travelling.

So, use this key area to really show Emirates how much travel means to you and how much you love to travel.

You then get the option to try another practice question. Once you have done this, you get the opportunity to try another. My advice is to take as try as many practice questions as you can.

Once you have finished practising, it’s time for the real thing!

So, knowing you are looking your absolute best, it’s time to go!

You are given a set of instructions. Please read these carefully. Note that you only have ONE attempt at each question. You also only have ONE minute to record your answer.

That’s it- phew!

Your answers have now been submitted. You are told your interview has now been successfully completed and you don’t need to do anything further with your video interview.

So, what happens next?

Well, here’s where things get REALLY interesting and we are now going to delve into the world of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Yep, we really are!

May I introduce you to Emmy, the Emirates robot?

Now when we are talking about robots what I’m really talking about is a computer program that uses Artificial Intelligence to make decisions without a human being involved.

Now, Emmy works behind the scenes at Emirates recruitment and she’s going to help us understand what her and her other robot friends decide who gets to go through to the next stage.

Because, believe it or not, NOT ONE SINGLE real person will look at your application until it has been thoroughly assessed by Emmy and her friends.

So, how automated is the Emirates recruitment system?

It is, in fact, totally automated!

Yep, from the minute you submit your application until a decision is taken whether to invite you to an assessment day or reject you, EVERY decision is taken by robots!

Now these robots can be quite the devil, so we need to keep on their good side to make sure our applications make it through!

Ok, so here’s how it works…

It is all done by machine-learning (where the computer is learning every single time a video is uploaded) and when your video is uploaded, it is assessed by Emmy and her friends.

Now, this software was devised by a combination of incredible cutting-edge technology and a team of highly qualified psychologists, so it truly is quite remarkable in what it does.

It will assess your video interview based on a number of criteria such as keywords, body language and voice patterns. It then checks your score against the characteristics of a “perfect” Emirates cabin crew member.

Depending on your score, you are either invited for an assessment day, sent for further investigation or rejected. All without a human being involved- wow!

Anyway, I really hope this guide will help you prepare (and pass!) your Emirates video interview!

Many thanks to Emmy and her robot friends for all their help in compiling this guide- I couldn’t have done it without them!

Emirates Open Day 2018 – Great news, Emirates have now opened their new Career Portal :-)

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

In this article I’m going to give you my top 12 tips for getting the most from this fabulous new resource.

Emirates Open Day 2017

You can access the portal by going to http://www.emiratesgroupcareers.com/

Tip 1 – Only ever apply for  jobs via this website.  There are a lot of unscrupulous websites that claim to recruit on behalf of Emirates but this is simply not true.  Emirates will only recruit cabin crew via the website http://www.emiratesgroupcareers.com/

Tip 2 – Don’t just jump into the site by clicking on the “Search and Apply” button.  Instead  you’ll see that there is a menu with three items along the top of the page .  Explore each of these because there is a huge amount you can learn about the Emirates Recruitment Process

Emirates Open Day 2017
From the top menu click on “Working With Us”

Tip 3 – Make sure you use the arrow at the bottom of the page to fully expand your view of the page (you don’t want to miss out on some really cool stuff).

Emirates Open Day 2017
Make sure you use the arrow at the bottom of the page to fully expand your view of the page

When you expand the Working With Us Section you’ll see some messages from key personnel throughout the organisation and this takes me directly to tip 4:

Tip 4 – Start your Emirates Dossier now! It can be an online file or a simple paper notebook, it doesn’t really matter, but what does matter is that you now start to learn about the key people in the company as well as the messages they are trying to communicate.  Imagine how impressive it would be if you could quote The Chairman during your 2 to 1 interview.

four
Tip 5 – Make up an information file and start to take a note of key people within Emirates

Tip 5 – Make sure you use the expand arrow in each of the relevant sections.  That way you won’t miss out on any of the information that is not all that obvious to find

Emirates Open Day 2017
Use the expand arrow to make sure that you can access all the information

Tip 6 – Towards the bottom of the “Working With Us” Page is an overview of other companies in the Emirates Group.  Put this in your Emirates Dossier for future reference – it could be useful at some point during the open day

Emirates Open Day 2017
You should try to learn a bit about other companies in the Emirates Group

Tip 7 – If you’ve not got one create a Twitter Account and follow Emirates. They tweet all the time and it’s a great source of information for your interview, there is nothing more impressive than somebody going to an assessment day who is really aware of what the company is about.

Emirates Open Day 2017
You should follow Emirates on Twitter

Tip 8 – Explore the website section called Dubai, Our Home.  It’s full of videos, information and other resources about what it’s like to live in Dubai. Don’t turn up for an assessment day unless you know what life in Dubai will be like.  If Emirates think you will suffer from “culture shock” and won’t be able to settle in Dubai then they won’t give you the job.

nine
You can access the Dubai, Our Home section from the top menu on the front page

Emirates Open Day 2017
The section of the website called Living in Dubai has an extensive menu that covers everything you need about moving there.

Tip 9 – Pay absolute attention to all of the resources about the recruitment process – especially those relating to personal appearance and grooming

eighteen

Use the Interactive Guide To Help You With Personal Grooming & Experience

Tip 10 – Make sure you learn the Training Journey, don’t turn up to an Assessment Day without a clear picture of what will happen when you are selected

twenty
The website includes an overview of the Emirates Recruitment Process – you should learn this

Tip 11 – You should be aware the Emirates have now confirmed that THEY WILL BE USING VIDEO INTERVIEWS.  To keep up to date with the latest developments you should join the FREE Facebook Group called The Departure Lounge.  In this group you’ll be able to chat with current Emirates Crew as well as airline recruitment experts.

Emirates Video Interview 2017
Emirates have confirmed that they will now be using video interviews as part of their cabin crewrecruitment

Tip 12 – If you’ve any questions about the new Emirates recruitment process please ask them below and I’ll do my best to answer you directly

Emirates Careers: How to wow at the Emirates Open Day

Want an Emirates Career?

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

Then read on and find out what you need to do on the Emirates cabin crew open day

Ok, so in my last post, we had a chat about how great it would be to work as Emirates cabin crew and all the many benefits there are on offer. In this post I want to give you more detail about the Emirates Open Day including;

  • Convincing Emirates Airlines you’re the person for them
  • The “Nitty-Gritty” of the Emirates Open Day
  • How Exactly Emirates Airlines Recruit
  • How the Emirates Airlines Screening Process Works
  • How To Find Out When Emirates Open Days Are Coming Up
  • How to Complete The Emirates Airlines Online Application
  • The Scary CV HandOver
  • What you MUST do at Every Stage of the Emirates Airline’s Recruitment Process

So, what is it- Emirates cabin crew or Emirates flight attendant?

Actually, before I go any further, someone reprimanded me recently me for using the term Emirates cabin crew and NOT Emirates flight attendant.Hands up! I’m guilty as I’m from the UK so we use the term Emirates cabin crew, but I’ll try my hardest to use the term Emirates flight attendant as well throughout this blog and a shout-out to all of you guys across the pond who would love to be an Emirates flight attendant!

How many people apply to Emirates Airlines each month??

We quickly realised that a LOT of people want to be Emirates cabin crew but it’s a really difficult job to secure. You only need to do a quick Google search of emirates group career or cabin crew interview questions to realise that they get over 15,000 applicants a month- gulp!
Say, what?!

Ok, I really need help so I can stand out at the Emirates Open Day

How on earth do you compete with that? Well, that’s where I come in! I’m going to give you lots of advice on how to turn this dream into reality. Now, you might be thinking- who on earth is she to be giving advice? Quite right! After all, why waste your precious time reading a blog written someone who has no idea of what they are talking about? So, why not check me out  and decide for yourself and I’ll meet you back here soon?

Happy? Then let’s keep going…

But how do I convince Emirates Airlines that I’m the person for them?

So, in my last post we looked at what Emirates cabin crew do and we realised that there are a number of key skills you need to display at ALL times throughout the Emirates recruitment process in order to prove to the recruiters that YOU are the person for them.A lot of the information I gave you last time was pretty general and you could, in fact, use it for any cabin crew interview you have coming up.

Emirates Careers Cabin Crew Open Day
There are things you can do to stand out at the open day

I’ve looked all over the web and the information on the Emirates Open Day just isn’t specific enough

You’re right. There is a TON of stuff out there on the web, that whilst really good, simply isn’t specific enough to be of much help to you.So, you may find yourself going to cabin crew forums where you will encounter THOUSANDS of people looking for advice but not really that many people offering it. And the information they are offering is too general and not detailed enough to be of much use to you.

I really need to know the nitty-gritty of what happens at the Emirates Open Day

I’m with you there! I bet you already know that you should wear “smart, business attire” (what is that by the way?) to the Emirates Open Day and you should match your CV to the job specification blah blah blah but you need the nitty-gritty right? You need to know exactly what happens at the Emirate open days and what’s involved in the WHOLE process of becoming Emirates cabin crew (and, of course, an Emirates flight attendant- see I haven’t forgotten!)

So, how exactly do Emirates Airlines Recruit?

I am asked all the time about how the Emirates interview process works, so I am going to tell you in great detail EXACTLY what’s involved, why Emirates Airlines include it in the process and what they are looking for at each stage. So, let’s look at how the specific process for Emirates Airlines works.
Before I begin though, I should just point out that the order of events may change slightly depending on where your Open Day is, the number of attendees at the Open Day and it may take place over one day or several days.

A screening process? Sounds quite scary, tell me more…

The screening process, regardless of length, consists of the following elements:

  • Online application. I think that even if you are attending an Emirates Open Day that’s available to anyone walking in off the street, it’s best to fill in the online application before the event.
  • Attend an Emirates Open Day event. This event varies depending on the country you are in. Sometimes it’s open to people walking in off the street, other times you may have to register in advance to attend.
Emirates Airlines Screening Process
The screening process doesn’t need to be scary!

How can I find out when Emirates Airlines Open Days are coming up?

Keep up-to-date with Emirates Open Days by using this page here

You can also follow Emirates Airlines on LinkedIn where you will be able to see all their vacancies as well

When you have a look at their Open Day page you can see you can that they offer either Open Days (where anyone can turn up) or Invitation Only days.

How can I get myself invited to one of these Emirates Open Days?

Only those who have been invited can attend one of these days. So, how can you be invited? You can be invited along by completing their online application. Those successfully completing their online application will be sent an appointment to attend one of these days. Those who have not been successful in their application will NOT be given an invitation.

And how do I complete their online application?

How do you apply to become Emirates cabin crew (and ahem, Emirates flight attendants)? This is where it all begins! Go to the link below..

http://www.emiratesgroupcareers.com/english/careers_overview/cabin_crew/cabincrewassessmentdays

..and click on APPLY NOW

Oh no, I’m rubbish at online application forms. I have no idea what Emirates Airlines are looking for!

Don’t fall at the first hurdle.  You can join my free private Facebook group called Project- Get Hired where we have current Emirates Airlines cabin crew who are happy to answer questions and give you advice.  I’m also in the group daily helping people and would be more than happy to answer any questions about your online application,

Wait, what? A punctuality test?!

So, let’s get back to the Open Day event. A wee word of warning- these Emirates Open Days are also set-up as punctuality tests, so if you’re not in the room you should be by the published start time, you’re out for good! Give yourself TONS of time to get there and be friendly to EVERYONE you meet.

Emirates Flight Attendant
Be friendly to EVERYONE you meet

Why do I need to demonstrate great listening skills?

When you check-in for the Emirates Open Day you will be give a sticker which you will be expected to wear for the ENTIRE event, so please don’t take it off as it doesn’t match your lipstick as this will simply show you up as someone who can’t take instruction well (which is SO important when working as cabin crew!).  The number on this sticker is how you will be identified throughout the process, so make sure you listen out for it. Don’t let the Emirates recruiters shout out “No.24” repeatedly, to then look down and realise you are number 24- you won’t look good! So make sure you know your number and you listen out for it.

Again, remember, to be Emirates cabin crew (or an Emirates flight attendant!) you will need to be good at listening to your passenger’s requests, so you need to show the recruiters that you are a great listener by listening intently to everything being said during the day.

I’m going to be posting a blog soon that covers this CV handover in a lot more detail, so you should sign-up below so we can tell you when it’s out! (and I will reveal whether it is like a catwalk or not!)

What, that’s it? The Emirates Open day is over?

There will usually then be a break for lunch and only those applicants that have passed the CV handover will return for the rest of the day.  It’s really worth noting that you will have very limited to NO interaction with your Emirates recruiters before this stage, so the entire screening event is based on your CV and your personal presentation so remember- FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT!

You will then be given a one-to-one or two-to-one interview with a member of the recruiting team

Emirates Flight Attendant Uniform
It could take up to 6 weeks to receive your golden call

A gate? What’s that got to do with Emirates?

Remember, this is a general summary of the whole process. You should try and look at each stage in the process as a gate you have to pass through. So, in order to get your dream job as Emirates cabin crew (or as an Emirates flight attendant) you have to pass through all the gates along the way!

…others don’t understand why it is SO important to have completed the online application correctly and indeed, loads of them won’t even have completed it!
They will show up thinking they can improvise, planning just to wing it and the job with Emirates Airlines will be theirs. However, they won’t be dressed right, won’t behave right and they won’t present themselves well at the Emirates Open Day and that is why the majority of applicants FAIL. But, here’s where you have an advantage…You, however, understand the importance of EVERY SMALL DETAIL of the process and you will stand out for all the RIGHT reasons.

Phew, aren’t you glad you’re reading this blog?

Yeah, but I could be doing with a bit more detail about the different stages of the Emirates Open Day

You’ve got it! My next few blogs are going to go into a LOT more depth about the Emirates Open Day So, sign-up below to make sure you don’t miss out on them!

Let’s fly Emirates!

Please don’t be disheartened though! The process is diffcult, I’m not going to lie, but if you’re prepared to put in the work and effort, then before you know it, you’ll be pinning on your wings and taking to the skies as Emirates cabin crew (or, yep, you’ve guessed it!), an Emirates flight attendant! Let’s fly Emirates!

What frightens you most about the Emirates Open Day process?

Before you go, please tell me below what most frightens you most about the Emirates open day process and I’ll do my very best to cover these fears in my subsequent blogs!
See you soon and remember,

#believeinyourself

Take care

The 5 things Emirates Airlines Recruiters look for on the Open Day

**UPDATE June 2018.  Emirates have stopped using video interviews and are now back using open days.**

READ ALL ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON AT EMIRATES AT MY LATEST BLOG POST HERE

There is one simple reason why I have written this blog for you – my frustration at watching really good candidates not being able to get their dream job because of the most basic mistakes at the Emirates Open Day.

Reading this blog and sticking to all of the rules you find it in will put you ahead of the competition- way ahead!

So, let’s begin…

Would you like a career that flies you to major cities all over world?

And, when you arrive, you have a room waiting for you in a five star hotel AND you’re given local currency to do some serious spending!

This same career pays for your living accommodation, bills and takes you to and from work! All whilst you are living in one of the most exciting cities in the world full of beaches, shopping, resturants, bars and so much more!

Add to this free medical insurance, thirty days paid holidays, free leave tickets so you can jet off somewhere exotic on your hols, end of service bonus- oh, I could go on and on!

Now I know this sounds like something from a celebrity gossip magazine, but believe it or not, this is reality for Emirates cabin crew!

Emirates Recruitment Open Day
Emirates is an expanding airline and constantly on the look-out for new crew

Everything I have just mentioned is part of the benefits package for all new crew and the great news is that Emirates, as a rapidly expanding airline, are always on the look-out for new members of cabin crew which is great news for you.

Life as crew is FANTASTIC and the opportunities it will provide you with are incredible. One of my ex-students, Kirsty, is now living the high-life out in Dubai and she has very kindly agreed to give you a peek at her incredible life- I warn you now, you will be jealous!

Kirsty now travel the world with Emirates
Kirsty now travels the world with Emirates

However, here’s the thing to be aware of about fantastic jobs- EVERYONE wants one

Emirates knows that. These cabin crew jobs are VERY competitive and there is NO shortage of applicants

I’m sorry to say that the VAST majority of applicants that turn up at Emirates Open Days are not successful.

Typcially, of 100 people who apply to become cabin crew with Emirates, only 2 or 3 will be successful.

Yep, you read that right- of those who turn up at the Open Day, only 2-3% will be successful.

You’re probably sitting there thinking “Well, what’s the point? Those odds are rubbish!”

But, do you know the mad thing?

The VAST, VAST majority of people are turning up for these Open Days completely unprepared, which is GREAT news for you!

Why great news? Well, if you follow the advice I’m going to give you in this (and subsequent blogs) then you will be totally prepared and know EXACTLY what the recruiters are looking for. So, you’ll be well ahead of the other 97 candidates who just haven’t bothered!

Do you really think that Emirates is going to give such an amazing job to people who just turn up at Open Days without having prepared?

Of course they’re not, so that’s why you’re going to be at such an advantage. Is this unfair? Of course it is, but hey, if you’re prepared to put in the work then you should be rewarded for it shouldn’t you?

Now, I’m not going to lie. Getting a job with Emirates is going to be a LOT of hard work, but I’m sure you’ll agree that all of the work you’re going to have to put in will be worth it in order to secure the “Golden Call” when Emirates call to offer you the job!

So, where to begin?

Well, it probably makes sense to have a think about the role of cabin crew with Emirates, as every answer you give at your Open Day and beyond should relate to the skills that Emirates are looking for.

The first thing you need to realise is that you are trying to become cabin crew for one of the world’s most PRESTIGIOUS airlines. So, the first step is having a clear understanding of what the job requires and what will be expected of you.

Emirates has built its reputation on uncompromising luxury, service and presentation to its passengers. Emirates will rely on you to provide the extremely high level of service its passengers are accustomed to.

Now you know now what the benefits the job brings, so you have to understand that with those benefits come strict standards and VERY high expectations from its employees.

You are THE face of customer service and so you are the most important part of the airline. Remember , passengers are paying a premium for flying with Emirates and when they consider their experience, who will they remember?

It won’t be the pilot, sitting up front, flying the plane and making the odd passenger announcement. It won’t be the guy who checked you in, took your boarding pass and wished you a pleasant flight. Nor will it be the baggage handler who made sure your bag made it to the flight on-time.

No, passengers will remember YOU and your fellow cabin crew members and the service you offered them on-board.

Emirates Cabin Crew working with children
Passengers will remember YOU and your fellow cabin crew members and the service you offered them on-board.

Studies show that the single biggest negative memory passengers retain from a flight is an unfriendly experience with cabin crew. Passengers will forget about long delays, bad food and cramped seats but will NEVER forget bad service.

You will be expected to provide OUTSTANDING customer service on long flights all around the world. It won’t matter what time of day it is, how long you have been on your feet or whether you’ve now been awake for more than 24 hours- if a passenger in 23C wants some champagne then you have to serve it to them with a SMILE on your face.

Sign up and I’ll send you my FREE 19 page CV Guide which includes the CV I used to get an invite to the Emirates Assessment Day

You will also have to deal with some difficult situations on-board. A drunk passenger in 12A has just been sick all over the baby sitting in the passenger’s lap next to him? Well, you’ll have to deal with this situation, calm everyone down and then- to add insult to injury- clear up the vomit! It really isn’t a job for the faint-hearted (particularly when you have to clear up vomit with a smile on your face!)

You will also be trained for any emergency you encounter on-board, so you must be able to remain calm and composed at all time. In an emergency situation, your passengers will look to you for guidance and you must be able to provide it.

So, why am I telling you all of this?

Well, these are some of the qualities that Emirates recruiters are looking for, so you MUST be able to convince them that you are capable of this and SO MUCH MORE.

The very specific qualities Emirates are looking for are:

  • Professional
  • Empathetic
  • Progressive
  • Visionary
  • Cosmopolitan

So, you need to ensure that everything you say and do during your Open Day must reinforce these qualities and prove to the recruiters that you have them in abundance.

I am asked all the time about how the Emirates interview process works, so in my next blog  I am going to tell you in great detail EXACTLY what’s involved.
